Mobile and tablets can harm your body – children are most at risk

Researcher Heidi Haavik is concerned that children who hang too much with the head can have major musculoskeletal disorders as adults.

Very harmful for the skeleton, but also the brain

Children can get muscle injuries of mobile use as follows them the rest of their lives, warns researcher.

Very many, especially children and adolescents, has an assertive, stooping posture when looking at mobile phone, and this is very detrimental to the skeleton, but also the brain, says Heidi Haavik, chiropractor with a doctorate in neurophysiology.

Scientists see a variety of ailments that occur because of all the screen time, including major neurological and psychological disorders.

In a survey conducted by the British Chiropractic Association in 2013 had 40 percent of children between 11 and 16 years experienced pain in the neck or back as a result of the use of computers, mobile or tablet.

Sitting and the spine…

Heidi Haavik are trained chiropractor and a doctorate in neurophysiology. She also sits on the board of the World Federation of Chiropractic’s Research.

Children’s bodies are especially prone to such ailments. Parents must take responsibility early, otherwise injuries accompany the children for life, she says.

Haavik recommend that children lie on their stomachs when they use mobile and tablet, or preferably puts the tablet in a holder on the table in front of them so they can sit and look straight ahead on the screen. On a child weighs head more compared to what muscles tolerate than on an adult. In addition, do not children so light that they must address themselves when they get hurt.

In the British study was that only 15 percent of parents who had noticed that the children had the wrong posture.

Do not ignore children with neck pain. It could affect the development of balance, head movement  and ability to learn to read, say Powys.

Heidi Haavik is from Vikersund and conduct their own research in New Zealand, where she moved as a student. Powys has the last 15 years won several research awards and is involved in research at a number of universities in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Europe and Scandinavia.

We get used to pain …

Our head, weighing three to four kilograms, is designed to balance on top of the spine and look straight ahead. Luter one forward, trailer entire head weight of muscles and tendons attached neck. By continuous load damage to musculoskeletal. This can lead to two-term problems, according Haavik:

The first is that one can get pain, and according to recent research is pain often a learned condition. That body has adjusted to a life with pain and does nothing to counteract the condition, so that children with poor posture can become adults with chronic pain, says Powys.

Mood and breathing are affected

The second issue sits in the central nervous system…

Chronic muscle pain can lead to unhealthy changes in the spine, which is the main road for communication between the body and the brain. If the impulses of the body be wrongly interpreted by the brain, leads to impaired balance, fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Besides affecting it in some individuals mood, breath and ability to handle stress, says Powys.

Children with pain become adults with pain.

Your Spine & Today’s Technology

Technology is literally killing our spines!

Use of laptops, phones and tablets  can have a dark side via  associated spinal strains that commonly occur from hours of forward head posture, plus forward upper spinal strain when people obsessively watch small screens. The head is like a bowling ball that strains the neck.

Researchers have found that typing on a touch-screen for long periods of time may be more likely to cause muscle issues in the upper body than using a conventional keyboard. Golden Bay Chiropractic Works could help with ergonomic advice and precise spinal adjustment as required.

Unlike the traditional keys found on desktop and PCs, touch-screens (tablet virtual keyboards) and phones are activated by any physical contact with the skin. Therefore users are unable to rest their fingers on the keyboard and must keep their fingers and wrists hovering over the screen to avoid accidentally hitting the keys. This can lead to ‘prolonged static muscle loading’ – when muscles are kept tense and motionless – in the shoulders, the researchers at Northern Illinois University said.

Lead author Jeong Ho Kim said: ‘The prolonged static muscle loading is a risk factor for musculoskeletal disorders, thus using a virtual keyboard for long periods of time may increase the risk for musculoskeletal discomfort and disorders in the neck and shoulder. ’It comes as researchers last week warned of a modern affliction known as ‘text neck’.  A study by surgeons found that holding the head at 60 degrees – typical of our posture when texting on a phone – exerts 22 kilograms of pressure on the top part of the spine.

Lead researcher Kenneth Hansraj, Chief of Spine Surgery at New York Spine Surgery & Rehabilitation Medicine, said the extra stress may lead to ‘early wear, tear, degeneration and possibly surgeries’. According to Ofcom, 44 per cent of UK households now have a tablet – up from less just 24 per cent a year ago. Australia also has the same upward trend with  increased usage of smart phones and tablets increasing potential harm.

Dr Barrie’s Chiropractic Info Snippet!!

Are many cases of diagnosed fibromyalgia like a mirage in the desert, with many patients buying into a false labels that ruins their
quality of life?

32 years of examining makes me often cringe when I am presented with many of these so called ‘fibromyalgia” cases.
What if you have had a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia just because you have multiple areas of pain and the practitioner you have consulted seems confused what your problem is?

Its time for another opinion! Do not accept it and please delve deeper!

In recent months I have had new patients appear that have had their pain levels reduced hugely by up to 80% with specific chiropractic adjustments that is shaking this often “over used” fibromyalgia label. Certain forms of this condition can be genuine where rheumatoid factor is found in the blood as it lifts beyond a mere “guess” into diagnostic believability, but realise as chiropractors we are essentially natural nerve doctors rather than bone doctors.

As a chiropractor who has examined over 25,000 patients, I have seen too many times, multiple areas of nerve interference that can easily mimic symptoms of fibromyalgia to a point that people are suffering for no reason!

The bottom line is get a proper hands on chiropractic examination to see if nerve interference is causing your “fibromyalgia like’ symptoms!

Nothing is more heartening than helping people get their lives back!

Chiropractic Empowers Gym Enthusiasts!

Yes!  You Could Exercise Again!

Being able to exercise has major benefits in reducing the effects of ageing by maintaining flexibility, reducing osteoporosis and increasing energy levels. Overall, exercise is an essential anti-ageing strategy. For many people not being able to exercise even  makes them feel physically sick.

But what if you are feeling restrictive back pain and limited spinal range of motion with your gym workout you may completely lose all your motivation to exercise at all as “its all too difficult.”

In my 30 plus years of practice I have witnessed vast amounts of patients who have got their gym exercise “mojo” back with an effective comprehensive chiropractic approach.

If you are suffering “gym workout restriction” you definitely need to consider a comprehensive chiropractic examination of the spine and related joints as the mechanics of your spine has a huge affect on your ability to exercise. It is a tragedy to be forced to give up something you enjoy and is so good for you.

If gym exercise is important to you, we are ready to examine you and get proactive!

Do You Need Spinal Pain First?

images 88Do you need spinal pain first before you have chiropractic?
The answer to this is absolutely no! This is because spinal pain is usually the last stage of spinal subluxation.

Many spinal problems have painless build up and proactive, health conscious people need to have periodic expert posture analysis and periodic spinal examination in their spinal health regime.

When I examine patients I am looking for these “silent problems” that are, many times, tender to touch.  A patient often  says “I did not know about that point.”

After 32 years of examining and spinally adjusting  thousands of people I am amazed how many patients still view the pain they have as “new” over a day or a week, when physical examination indicates chronic long term inflammation patterns in the spine that have only “just got painful.”

Like holes in teeth, we can be oblivious to building problems until expertly examined.

Interestingly, in my practice I find in only about 20 % of cases where a patient’s spinal condition has only “just started”.
This is usually through an unexpected sudden trauma or accident like a car accident whiplash, unexpected fall, difficult unexpected birth traumas, are all examples.

Closer physical examination of the majority of patients plus case histories, indicates about 80% of other cases have had months if not many years of “silent chronic  buildup” without pain symptoms, but have had silent signs clearly seen by expert spinal examiners.

“Silent buildup” has visible signs that chiropractors readily observe like:

  1. Tilted head or neck.
  2. Forward head posture.
  3. Raised or lowered shoulder.
  4. Twisted ribcage.
  5. Tilted hips or pelvis with associated functional short leg.
  6. Foot pronation/supination.

Further confirmation comes from examination of the normally “silent”trigger point indicators and spinal range of motions, active (pain to touch) trigger points of upper/mid  cervical spine, scapulars, rib heads, lumbar, sacral and femur heads, lower lateral  legs and achilles tendons.

As spinal health is so important, treating yourself to an expert examination is an “ounce of prevention.”
